AIRBUS PART NUMBERING SYSTEM

AIRBUS for its proprietary parts, assemblies establishes part numbers. These part numbers are based on the engineering drawing that defines that part and assembly. The first nine digits of the part number reflect the drawing reference. The next three digits are the sequential part numbers. An addition three digits are available to define a delivery configuration which may be developed for spare parts.

Note 1

There may be a numeric prefix preceding the part number which is sometimes used internal to AIRBUS. The prefix is not included in the part number, although it may sometimes be seen on parts or shipping documents. This is typically done in different print styles, and is easily distinguished from the part number when understood. These prefixes are not reflected in the IPC, and are “NOT TO BE USED FOR ORDERING PARTS”.

The initial alpha code indicates which aircraft-model drawing set the part was developed for, but parts may be used on different models of aircraft without changing the alpha code. Thus a part with an alpha code of "A" might be installed on the A340, for example. ALPHA CODES:
- A-A300, A310, A300-600 models drawing set
- B-A310 model, electrical drawing only.
- D,E-A318, A319, A320, A321 models drawing set
- F,G-A330, A340 models drawing

The suffix is normally two or three digits. The 2-digit technical specification number is used to describe delivery configuration for parts, which may be different from the production drawing to facilitate installation as a replacement part. These differences are typically things like: holes left undrilled, consumable hardware included with component, re-usable panels omitted, etc. Specific differences from the production drawing are detailed in the Spares Technical Specification (STS) sheet. See example, figure 1.
An alpha character may be included, normally in the 13th or 15th position, to indicate a customized color scheme on the component. This color indicator may appear with the 12-digit basic part number, or in conjunction with the Technical Specification Number.

There may be an alpha/numeric character following the 15 digits part number, which is sometimes used internal to Airbus. The additional characters are not included in the part number as listed in the IPC. This is typically done in different print styles and is easily distinguished from the part number when understood. In all cases the part number will be interchangeable, 2 way with the amended part number.

IMPLICATIONS OF TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION:

Parts which have identical 12 digit basic part numbers are interchangeable provided STS differences are incorporated during part replacement. (For example, re-usable panels must be recovered from the removed component, if that is a specified difference).
Parts produced for factory installation, or for spares support and exactly in accordance with the production drawing, are assigned Technical Specification "00". Some of these parts were marked with the 12-digit basic part number only. These parts are equivalent to parts with Technical Specification "00". Therefore the basic part number is not included in the IPC, but is understood to be identical to the 14-digit part number ending in "00".

25 to 29 Suffix changes each time production makes a definition change (not IPC relevant). Non procurable parts.
30 to 39 (refer to STS) Items not complying with drawings. Procurable parts.
40 to 49 Items complying with drawings. Definition changes that do not require a PN change. Procurable parts.
50 “Spares” complying with drawings rarely used. Procurable parts.
51 to 59 (refer to STS) “Spares” not complying with drawings. Specific definition to facilitate line maintenance. Procurable parts.
60 to 89 Installations not complying with drawings. Non procurable parts.
90 to 94 (refer to STS) Items specific to repair kits. Used to identify a part repaired during a working party. Procurable parts.
95 to 98 Items specific to modification kits. Used to re-identify a part after Service Bulletin retrofit (reworked). Procurable parts.
99 Installations complying with drawings. Non procurable parts.
Letters B,C,D,E Items subject to harmony. Procurable parts.
AA to ZZ ”Electro-mechanical” and spare constituent assemblies. Procurable parts.
